You hear the
waterfall
before you
see it.
Rounding the
bend, it's
suddenly
upon you.
Immediately
upon passing
between the
stone
pillars, all
anxiety
seems to
melt away
and a sense
of
tranquility
surrounds
you. Rolling
down your
window, you
breathe in
the fresh
mountain
air, which
for some
reason seems
to be purer
here than
anywhere
else and for
no reason at
all, you
find
yourself
smiling.
At the top
of the hill,
there is a
clearing and
as if out of
nowhere, the
lake appears
before you.
"So, this is
the source
of the
waterfall,"
you reason.
Suddenly,
your
attention is
brought back
to the
winding road
and you
brake, as a
mother duck
with babies
in tow make
their way
across the
road to the
water. A few
moments ago,
you would
have found
this
interruption
annoying?.
now it
brings a
chuckle.
The lush
trees that
line the
road seem to
spread their
branches in
welcome as
you pass
under them.
The blue sky
is barely
visible
through the
thick
foliage.
Occasionally,
a burst of
sunlight
will shoot
through the
trees,
creating
prisms of
light that
dance across
the car.
Snuggled in
the grove of
trees, the
outside
world ceases
to exist.
Only sounds
of nature
can be
heard; the
breeze
rustling
through the
leaves, the
sweet melody
of the birds
and
somewhere in
the distance
can be heard
the call of
a peacock.
As abruptly
as it
started, the
grove ends.
Things seem
to happen
that way
here, the
natural
beauty of
this little
mountain
getaway
unfolding
like the
pages of a
book.
Nestled
among the
tall pines
and rolling
hills are
the main
grounds.
On the left,
the elegant
Woodward
House with
its circular
drive boasts
a
prestigious
location as
it welcomes
you to the
property.
Pass "Our
Lady Of The
Hills"
shrine, then
the Grand
Ole Hall
with its
ancient oak
floors and
4200 square
feet of
meeting/banquet
space
overlooking
the
wonderful
organic
gardens and
the lake
beyond.
Across from
the Grand
Ole Hall is
the Primrose
Suite, a
luxurious
retreat for
those
seeking
seclusion
and romance.
Cozy Cabin
rooms with
porch swings
greet you as
you continue
through the
complex. A
stroll
behind the
cabins will
answer the
question as
to the
origin of
the peacock
call.
The highest
knoll is
reserved for
the Lodge.
Built in the
early 1900s,
this
historic
building
houses
twenty
individually
designed
guest rooms
with hand
crafted
armoires.
The warmth
of the
commons room
with large
stone
fireplace,
distinctive
wood accents
and private
meeting room
give this
wonderful
historical
building its
unique
character.
And, if you
listen
closely, you
may hear the
voices of
prior
occupants
who walked
her halls.
Just down
the hill
from the
Lodge are
the Historic
Poolside
Cottages
that open
out onto the
swimming
pool. The
newest
lodging
additions
are the
Garden
Hamlet
Cottages
near the
barn with
the goats,
chickens,
donkeys, and
peacock.
Mingled with
the
delightful
fragrance
from the
flowerbeds,
comes a
different
aroma, but
nonetheless
tantalizing.
Curiosity
and a
rumbling
stomach
bring you to
Season's
restaurant
with its
side terrace
and outdoor
brick oven.
Renown for
its unique
and enticing
cuisine,
patrons come
from all
over the
Carolinas to
sample its
fare.
All around
guests are
strolling
the grounds,
playing
horseshoes,
or relaxing
in one of
the
hammocks.
The
unspoiled
beauty is
everywhere.
This is
truly nature
at its best.
